Fetch and Follow Stories | Jade and Daisy

We first met Jade in our Netil Market days when we both used to be stall holders. Brighton based Jade now runs her own creative photography studio focusing on product styling, photography and content creation for independent small businesses. Alongside this she crafts beautiful consciously jewellery for her label Pepper You.

Jade has recently welcomed Daisy, the very cute and playful cockapoo puppy into her life and this fluffy ball of energy has quickly become her studio and photography assistant.

Tell us about your Daisy and how she came into your life

My partner and I had wanted a Dog for a long time but we knew it was a huge commitment so we though it was best to think about it for a long time and make sure our lives could allow us to be dog owners. Towards the end of last year we just couldn’t wait any longer and in January this year we met puppy Daisy! From the moment I held her I knew we had to have her in our home. She snuggled into me and had the waggiest tail I’ve ever seen!

How does your Daisy fit into your general day working?

I work as a product photographer and I also have a jewellery line (Pepper You) so I spend most days alone in my studio in Brighton. This is lucky because it means I can bring Daisy to work with me everyday. My partners office is also dog friendly so she gets to hang out there too (which I’m pretty sure she prefers because there’s more people there to fuss over her!)

When your not working were do you and Daisy like to hang out?

We are so lucky to live right by the sea and Daisy loves chasing waves and getting as sandy as she possibly can! Sadly we can’t take dogs on a large proportion of the beach in high summer so during those months we hang out at the park which is Daisy’s favourite place to meet new friends! Daisy really enjoys long walks and loves being off the lead so much... like most cockapoos - she’s incredibly energetic! We like to adventure to new places with Daisy - we recently explored the Seven Sisters Country Park which she really enjoyed.

What essentials do you always have on you when heading out for a dog walk and what do you carry them in?

POO BAGS! Always a ton of poo bags (biodegradable of course!) We also take her portable water bowl and some treats. In all honesty, these things are usually rattling around in the bottom of a large tote bag. I saw a dog walker with a bum-bag the other day which I thought is a brilliant idea - it means the essentials are much easier to access quickly.

What adventures do you and your dog have planned for the rest of the year?

We recently stayed in a shepherds hut in Chorleywood for the weekend and Daisy really enjoyed exploring the surrounding fields and rivers/streams - so more trips like that are on the cards for sure. We also have family who have just moved to France so we are hoping to drive over there with Daisy soon - they also have two cockapoos so it’ll be a cockapoo party!

Fetch & Follow Stories | Florence, Daphne and Elsie

We first came across Florence and her dogs Daphne and Elsie through the Tidy Street General Store's instagram page. Florence opened the store based in Brighton back in 2016, with an emphasis on modern craft with a beautifully curated selection of homewares, clothing and accessories. Since then she has gone on to set up The Bazaar London with Muna Arzouni as a response to today's throwaway fashion culture. A modern craft fair, The Bazaar is a celebration of slow shopping; of sustainability, creativity and craftsmanship which we were lucky enough to be part of last month.

Tell us about your dogs Elsie and Daphne

Elsie (the Toy Poodle) is the boss even though she’s a tenth of the size of Daphne (the Afghan Hound). They both have very different characters; Daphne is sensitive and aloof, she takes a while to trust people but forms really strong bonds. Elsie is a flirt who charms her way onto everyone’s laps.

How do they both fit into your general working day?

Having a shop means I’m lucky enough to be able to bring my dogs to work. They have a fan club now, and all the local kids come to visit them after school. Luckily I have an amazing dog walker who takes them out in the middle of the day, and because we live by the sea we often go for a sunset walk along the beach in the evenings.

Tell us about your store Tidy Street General Store and how it all began?

My mum and I had always wanted to open a shop. She’s an ex- stylist so has an amazing eye, and I had owned other businesses before so knew about that side of things. One day we found the perfect spot; a corner shop with massive windows and lots of natural light in the North Laine area of Brighton, which is full of independent shops. It seemed like fate.

We sell a mix of women’s fashion, jewellery, homewares and accessories. Our aim is to encourage people to make thoughtful purchases of special items that they will treasure forever, rather than the fast fashion that dominates the high street. We support small independent brands and craftspeople and try to showcase items that you may not see everywhere.

When you’re not working where do you and the dogs like to hang out?

We’re lucky enough to be surrounded by the most amazing countryside and the beach. Whilst Brighton becomes packed with tourists, there are many more amazing beaches down the coast. I try to take the dogs out of town at the weekends so we can enjoy Sussex. During the week we have a local graveyard where all the neighbourhood dogs gather at the same time every day. It’s such fun to watch; sometimes we’ll have 20 dogs of all shapes and sizes chasing each other. Brighton is amazing because it’s so dog friendly; dogs are allowed almost everywhere, so I’m very lucky.

What essentials do you always have on you when heading out for a dog walk and what do you carry them in?

Afghans are notorious for their lack of recall, so I have to have fresh roast chicken in my pocket if I’m going to let Daphne off the lead: it’s the only thing she thinks is worth coming back for. Aside from that I carry water and biodegradable poo bags, usually in a basket from my shop!

What adventures do you and the dogs have planned for the rest of the year?

We’ll be driving to the south of France this summer; last year we stopped in Champagne and stayed in a chateau with a moat for one night. Daphne and Elsie looked very at home; I’m not sure they wanted to come back to their basement flat in Brighton!
